Intermodal Systems are per se complex structures, getting and using the knowledge on interfaces, rules and stakeholders is often a major challenge. But to understand intermodality and its processes is crucial for an efficient and sustainable implementation of optimized processes. The basic requirement to achieve this is a secure, efficient and comprehensive information flow addressing the heterogeneous stakeholders (forwarder, ports, terminals, operators, shipper). The existence of a wide range of isolated applications describes perfectly that this basic requirement is not achieved yet. Against this background we need a standardised, technological independent approach to define the data requirements for the entire combined transport chain.
