A broad "pallet" of opportunities

Cabka-IPS is currently working with the Fraunhofer Institute IFF and other partners on further developing transponders for reusable pallets. The aim is to help connect load carriers to the Internet of Things as part of increasing digitalization and networking in production and logistics.

The fact that RFID technology opens up major new opportunities for logistics is no secret - but the industry still needs to identify the best way to harness this potential. Cabka-IPS is leading the way when it comes to RFID solutions for pallets. In collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation IFF, the company has developed a system for integrating RFID tags into plastic pallets. One highly successful application already in use is the Heilbronn Half Pallet (HHP).

However, this is by no means the end of the story for this development project. In collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute IFF and other partners, Cabka-IPS is now working on further developing the transponders on reusable pallets, which are designed to deliver a range of additional benefits. For instance, the pallets can use sensors to record environmental data such as temperature and humidity, and can transfer this information in real time. Users can also access all relevant data on mobile devices such as smartphones, smartwatches and tablets so that they are warned in good time and can react quickly when malfunctions occur or critical values are reached. What's more, with precise and continuous web-based analysis of ever-increasing volumes of information, it will be possible to manage long and complex value chains more efficiently and transparently than ever before.
