Permanent identification points for the capture of items and data are important to transport chains supported by RFID. Specifically, inspections of incoming and outgoing bulk goods are critical points where all scanned RFID transponders have to read reliably. At the same time, only relevant, i.e. no external unrelated, transponders should be read. Therefore, the Fraunhofer IFF developed its patented RFID Tunnelgate.
The benefits of the RFID Tunnelgate include reliable reading of RFID transponders with low reader power output // elimination of false positive scans by a shielded read zone and // reliable reading of RFID transponders regardless of their orientation because of full polarization independence.
One extremely successful example of the application of the IFF Tunnelgate is the scanning of outgoing shipments in the textile industry. Reliable reading of transponders in the Tunnelgate enables completely inventorying articles of clothing packed very compactly in shipping boxes. If items are missing in the boxes packed by hand, this is already detected in the country of manufacture. The globally available inventory is refreshed centrally in the inventory control system in real time.
Their high technical flexibility make RFID Tunnelgates freely scalable and thus suitable for the widest variety of applications - from small solutions on belt conveyors to automatic inventorying of entire truckloads. Furthermore, the basic technological principle is also transferrable to mobile assets such as load carriers.
The RFID gates of Fraunhofer IFF are also used for the management of RFID-tagged pallets. The pallet manufacturer CABKA and Fraunhofer IFF jointly show solutions for the RFID-based pallet management. The RFID gates are one important system solution within the pallets' logistic chain.
