Intralogistics: An industry's new-found identity united within a common forum
As companies search for new cost-cutting potential, an area which is coming under increasing scrutiny is internal logistics. This relatively recent development has led to an enhanced role for this sector of the economy, and to the need for a clearer profile so that it can better differentiate itself from external logistics. The adoption of the term "intralogistics" to describe the world of internal logistics spells a new identity for the sector.
Providers of intralogistics systems, components and software have banded together with their industrial associations - VDMA (the German Engineering Federation) and the Association for Warehousing and Factory Equipment (VBL) - to form a single sector within the framework of the "Intralogistics Forum."
For suppliers and industrial users as well as for journalists, the term "intralogistics" serves as an apt label to describe every aspect of in-house logistics, whether for materials or even information. The term covers everything related to implementing, managing, monitoring and optimizing in-plant materials handling in industrial enterprises or for wholesalers, retailers and the public sector. Intralogistics also optimizes the information flow between the various "logistics nodes" (e.g. production departments, distribution centers, airports, seaports, etc.).
